Mission
Medford Youth Lacrosse (MYL) is dedicated to helping children in our community learn this fast-paced and exciting sport. By teaching lacrosse at an early age, our coaches introduce kids to the fundamental abilities and knowledge players need to compete in high school, college, intramurals, or pickup games with their friends.
While we develop kids’ lacrosse skills, we also make sure players do just that—play. A key part of our practices are drills in which players learn by competing with their teammates, an approach that puts play at the center of everything we do on the field.
At MYL, we hustle in practice, get dirt on our uniforms, aim to win, and always have fun. We think our competitive and fun learning environment will make your young player fall in love with lacrosse every bit as much as our coaches and volunteers at MYL have.
Why Play Lacrosse?
Lacrosse is surging in popularity across the U.S. (and many other countries). ESPN and other networks now air matchups featuring top college teams like Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Duke, and Maryland. And the town of Medford has made it own mark in the sport: the Tufts University men’s lacrosse team won the Division III national title in 2010, 2014, and 2015, and Tufts women’s lacrosse team has competed in the NCAA tournament five times since 2009.
Today many young athletes are now making lacrosse their first choice over sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, and football. The endurance and skills players develop in lacrosse, like stick-handling, footwork, passing, shooting, and defending, improve their abilities in these other sports, too.
Lacrosse is a physical sport and involves contact but not to the degree of football or hockey. While qualities like size, speed, and strength give some players advantages, just as important to a player’s success is a solid understanding of the game. Smart and dedicated players are every bit as valuable to our team as those who rely on pure athleticism alone. At MYL, we make sure every player’s development is grounded in the fundamentals.
As a team sport, lacrosse also builds invaluable off-the-field skills. Players learn the importance of sportsmanship, what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves, and respect for their teammates, coaches, referees, umpires, and opponents.
